UCC Macra Chair Wins Best Speaker at Senior Debating Comp

It was the first time in many years that UCC Macra na Feirme had entered Seandún’s senior debating competition, which is the collective name for all of the macra clubs in South/mid Cork. The competition took place last Friday in the Oriel House Hotel, Ballincollig where UCC Macra opposed the motion that ‘the role of the president is an important one in today’s society’. They faced tough competition against Glanmire Macra, one of the most competitive and experienced clubs in the country.
The team was made up of Joseph Gorman, Chair of Macra UCC, who was the captain followed by Jessica Sheehan, Mary O’Neill and Nelius Cotter. The UCC team gave good arguments and were later encouraged and praised by the three adjudicators and it was Joseph Gorman who won best speaker of the night.
Overall the UCC team found taking part in the Senior Debating competition very beneficial. The ability to speak in public with proficiency is rare and requires a lot of practice and each of our representatives gained valuable experience by entering in the Macra public speaking competition and no doubt impressed members of other Macra clubs in the region showing them that despite the UCC Macra Society being based in a university with members constantly changing, we are just as competitive, active and legitimate as other Macra clubs in the region.
